Safety, Shops & Facilities

Act during an emergency, plan for disruptions, use AAD shops safely, and send building work to the right university service.

During an Emergency

Call 911 when there is an immediate threat to life or safety. During a university emergency, follow the latest VT Alert until the university issues an all clear or emergency personnel tell you otherwise.

Prepare for Emergencies and Disruptions

Use the university’s maintained planning system instead of saved copies of old building or continuity plans. Emergency Action Plans cover immediate life safety; Continuity of Operations Plans help departments sustain essential functions after a disruption.

Department emergency action plans For designated coordinators maintaining immediate life-safety plans.

Emergency Action Plans are maintained by departments in the Emergency Management Planning Portal and reviewed at least annually. Use the official page for the current process and portal access.

Building emergency plans For Building Emergency Coordinators and department representatives.

Building annexes contain location-specific information and changeable assignments. Inside AAD does not publish point-in-time copies. Coordinators should maintain and retrieve the approved plan through Emergency Management.

Continuity planning For authorized departmental continuity coordinators.

Departmental continuity plans are access-controlled because they describe essential functions, leadership succession, communications, and resources needed after a disruption. Use the official page and planning portal rather than distributing plan contents.

Use Shops and Makerspaces Safely

Training and access depend on the space, equipment, and work you plan to do. Do not rely on an old course list or waiver as proof that you are cleared to use a shop.

Find the shop or makerspace that supports your work and check who may use it.

Ask the instructor, supervisor, or space manager which EHS training and local orientation apply before you begin.

Complete hands-on, machine-specific training before using equipment, and follow the shop’s current access rules and required protective equipment.

Request Building or Facilities Service

Start with Virginia Tech Facilities Customer Service. Its current routing separates routine maintenance, urgent building problems, leased spaces, and customer-funded work.

Routine maintenance

Submit a ReADY Request for on-campus maintenance and use the request record to follow progress.

Urgent building problem

Open the Facilities Customer Service page for the current business-hours and after-hours reporting path.

Keys, signs, moves, or renovations

Use the customer-funded service guidance to determine whether an Interdepartmental Service Request is required.

Leased space

Follow the landlord or Virginia Tech route assigned to that property; the official page explains where to start.
