Virginia Tech’s Office of Research and Innovation sets the university-wide support structure. Its Research Support area is the practical directory for tools, training, compliance, and administrative guidance.

AAD Research and Creative Scholarship Support

Creative practice, exhibitions, performances, screenings, publications, and other nontraditional scholarship may need college coordination even when they do not begin as sponsored research. The Associate Dean for Research and Creative Scholarship is the college starting point when the right path is unclear.

FY 2027 Faculty Initiated Research Grant (FIRG) Full request for proposals — applications due September 14, 2026.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Faculty Initiated Research Grant (FIRG) program, funded by existing returned overhead, aims to support AAD faculty to produce exceptional research and creative scholarship.

Two tracks are available:

  • Track 1: SEED Grants – Up to $5,000 for projects that will lead to future external research proposals. (Approx. 3 awards)
  • Track 2: Mini Grants – Up to $1,500 for activities supporting faculty career development. (Approx. 10 awards)

Funding supports research and creative scholarship activities during the 2026–2027 academic year, including materials, supplies, equipment, data collection, travel, research assistance and open-access publication fees. Research grants may be used for performances as appropriate to the creative work of the faculty member (national and international scopes are preferred). Funds cannot be used for faculty summer salary, academic year buyouts, or transfers to external entities.

All expenditures must follow university policy. Software purchases require coordination with the AAD business office. Certain equipment (e.g., computers, projectors) will remain AAD assets.

Disbursement will occur in two phases:

  • 50% upfront at project start
  • Remainder released after a mid-year review with Prof. Karine Dupre in January 2027, pending demonstrated progress and work towards at least one of the expected outcome(s).

Final reimbursement requests are due by May 1, 2027. No extensions will be granted, and unused funds will be returned to the college. If additional funding has been received or requested from other sources, this must be disclosed in the proposal. Projects involving human subjects or vertebrate animals require appropriate approvals before research begins (not before submission).

Important note: Faculty on research leave during Spring 2027 can’t have the expenditures reimbursed during the research leave (VT policy). Unfortunately, it means that they can’t apply.

ELIGIBILITY

-Applicants must be an AAD tenure-track or collegiate faculty member, an AAD Professor of Practice, or an AAD Instructor on a continuing basis, with one designated Principal Investigator (PI). There are no limitations on the number of Co-PIs or other project personnel included in the project. Collaborations with faculty across the college are encouraged.

-Applicants must have an active and completed Expert Page (Profile Picture, Bio, Degrees, Sustainable Development Goals, Scholarly & Creative Works (this is automatically created by Elements), Research interest blurb (specifically at least 3 keywords). Contact Prof. Karine Dupre if you need help with it.

Tips

  • For an exhibition, performance, or screening, plan the audience experience, accessibility, venue and technical needs, staffing, safety, rights and permissions, budget, communications, and documentation early.
  • Bring in the appropriate university office when the work involves an external sponsor, contract or agreement, human participants, protected data, export controls, intellectual property, or another compliance requirement.
  • Do not treat an event, invitation, award notice, or sponsor conversation as approval to commit university resources or submit a proposal. The college and university support paths below establish the current next steps.

Other Funding Opportunities

Virginia Tech’s Find Funding page brings together the university’s primary funding database, federal and foundation searches, seed-funding listings, limited-submission opportunities, and other current discovery sources.

Tips

  • Funding Institutional supports tailored searches and alerts across government, private, and nonprofit opportunities. Some databases require a Virginia Tech network connection or university access.
  • Limited-submission opportunities have an internal selection process because a sponsor restricts how many proposals the university may submit.
  • Deadlines, eligibility, available amounts, and application instructions change. Follow the live opportunity and contact Research Development when a funding path or limited-submission requirement is unclear.

Research Administration Tools

The Office of Sponsored Programs supports externally funded proposals and awards. Summit is Virginia Tech’s research-administration system for starting proposals, developing budgets, routing approvals, and managing research agreements.

Tips

  • Summit Proposals keeps proposal communication, documents, budgets, and internal routing together. Faculty and departmental support staff can initiate a proposal or request budget help there.
  • Summit Agreements supports research-related agreements managed by Sponsored Programs, including many confidentiality, material-transfer, collaboration, and sponsored-research agreements.
  • Start early with the assigned pre-award support path. Current university procedure, required documents, and submission timing live on the official proposal pages rather than on Inside AAD.

Research Policies, Forms, and Compliance

The university maintains separate directories for research policies and forms, sponsored-program procedures, compliance programs, and required training. These sources carry the current requirements and working documents.

Tips

  • The policies, forms, and guidance directory is organized by subject, including human and animal research, biosafety, conflicts of interest, export and research security, privacy and data protection, research integrity, and sponsored programs.
  • The compliance directory explains which program owns questions involving human participants, animal care, responsible conduct, conflicts, sensitive data, research security, and environmental health and safety.
  • Required training depends on the work and the people involved. Check the maintained training page and the responsible compliance program before research begins.
