Your Network login is used to access the university’s eduroam (pronounced ‘ED-you-roam’) WiFi network from all your electronic devices.
Existing Users: You can keep your current user-generated Network account password as long as you wish. However, when you need a new one, your new password will now be system-generated (not user-generated).
New Users: When you create a new VT ID Username during the onboarding/orientation process, a Network account and password will be provisioned. Your Network account password will now be system-generated, and it is possible to view and retrieve it in Account Manager if you forget it or need to connect a new device.
The system-generated password is 19 characters long, comprised of 16 random alphabetic lowercase characters and 3 hyphens. For example, ‘uywo-ioon-dicl-qwaz’. The hyphens are part of the actual password, and need to stay. Copying and pasting the password is allowed. As needed, you will also be able to generate a new password, invalidating the previous password.
FAQs
What will happen to my current Network Account password?
If you already have a network password that you created, you can continue to use that password until you decide to generate a new one: it will work exactly as it does now. Essentially, current users are grandfathered in until they forget their existing network password or choose to convert to the viewable, randomly generated network password.
What if I can’t remember the new password?
Ultimately, you don’t need to remember the system-generated password. When you get a new device, go to Account Manager to view your network password and connect the new device to WiFi.
How do I get to Account Manager if I can’t set up eduroam?
Account Manager can be accessed by connecting to Virginia Tech’s open guest wireless network (SSID: VirginiaTech) and other networks such as your cell provider’s network.
Can I view my user-generated network password in Account Manager?
No. The older “user-generated” password is not stored, so we cannot provide it to you.
